I adore this machine! I was initially turned on to coffee roasting by a fellow triathlete, who had an SR500. He did a demo with the fan speed and roasting temps, and I was impressed with the whole ritual. My fiancée invested in an SR300 for me for Christmas in 2011. It has been THE BEST gift I have ever received, bar none! I simply love to experiment with roasting various green beans from around the world.

A few suggestions: Follow the guidelines about NOT roasting back to back, as well as keeping the unit clean. I have just now sent back the base unit because it is not getting to first crack. It has given me almost three years of RIGOROUS service, and it is wholly worth it, regardless of repair cost. Tim was very cordial in telling me to send it to him, so I am keeping my fingers crossed that it will be ok.

I will add that you must use some common sense with this unit. IT GETS HOT! Yes, that is basic, but I tended to forget, and made the mistake several times of tapping or lightly banging the top portion while still quite warm to remove the chaff. THIS WILL CHIP THE EDGES OF THE PLASTIC COVER IF THE UNIT IS STILL HOT. Wait a bit for the parts to cool, and then use a soft brush as suggested.

Trust me: once you start roasting your own green beans, you may never go to Charbuck’s (oops!) again. The taste and aroma will hook you for a lifetime. Small batches, .letting the beans “set”, using a burr grinder, consideration of a professional brewing system or French Press, beginning with cool or cold water, following the suggestions of the brewers for individual roasting duration for various beans, etc., all these steps lend to some amazing cups of coffee. The best part is that you get to experiment with roasting duration, which can really change the whole character and flavor of your cup. Note that I am certainly not a professional brewer or taster, and cannot even begin to discern the involved descriptions of the range of characteristics in coffees. Same thing with wines, actually, and my brother who is in that business would laugh. I just know what I like. You may well find that you have never tasted coffee before, once you start on your journey!

May I put in a plug for my favorite place to purchase the beans? It is Burman Brothers Coffee in Wisconsin. Jon and Gary are wonderful proprietors, with knowledge to spare, and clearly care about their product and their customers. Aside from a trial or two with Sweet Maria’s in San Francisco (and they were good too!), I have used Burman exclusively.

    Good luck!
